The systems analyst must be able to understand the disciplines of software engineering and those of the organization's activities. The relationship between these two areas and the current level of technology determines the interaction between the feasible and the desirable.
Each potential application should be subjected to a series of examinations to verify whether, in fact, the requested function will present the quality of performance desired by the user. If the improvement in question appears to be feasible, and with the necessary resources for the elaboration of the application, the project is allowed to proceed. At this juncture, the role of the systems analyst changes and the detail mentioned above must be replaced. For that, it becomes necessary to identify the functions that will be delivered when the application ends. The functions will represent the “tests” that the complete application must satisfy, in order to prove that the requirements have, in fact, been met.
After the detail is established and the “what” is fully specified, at least in its first version, the role of the systems analyst changes once again, becoming the software architect and project manager. The “what” should be transformed into “how”, simultaneously to the continuous verification that the application remains in compliance with the detailed specifications of the system.
The service functions assigned to the systems analyst and the profession linked to systems analysis are extremely vast. Many organizations define a category called programmer / analyst, further expanding the description. Thus, according to the scope of the job title, both organizations and individuals fall into a wide range of uses. Larger organizations have separate departments for analysis and programming and have analysts who “live” or in a group linked to systems development analysis, or in the organization of the business that will use the application. Some organizations have the position of systems architect; others, that of project manager and still others that of system designers.
