What is a domain

In a domain:

  • One or more computers are servers. Network administrators use servers to control security and permissions for all computers in the domain. This facilitates changes, which are made automatically on all computers. Domain users are required to provide a password or other credentials each time they access the domain.

  • If you have a user account on the domain, you can log on to any computer in the domain without having an account on it.

  • It's likely that you can only make limited changes to a computer's settings because network administrators always want to ensure consistency across computers.

  • There can be thousands of computers on a domain.

  • Computers can be on different local networks.
