CIOs play a critical role in preparing businesses for the impact that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have on business strategies and employment, according to analysts at Gartner. Recent research by the consultancy shows that, by 2022, intelligent machines and robots could take the place of professionals who, until now, have a set of skills that made them an asset to companies. This is the case of certain functions performed by lawyers, workers in the health sector and, naturally, in the Information Technology area.

"The economics of artificial intelligence and machine learning will transform many of the functions performed by professionals today into low-value utilities," said Stephen Prentice, vice president of Gartner.

“The effects of artificial intelligence in different industries will force companies to adjust their business strategies. Many competitive industries, with high business margins, will start to resemble “utilities”, as AI transforms complex work into paid-for-consumption services, similar to what happens with electricity”.

The effects AI will have on companies will be different for each industry, business, organization and customers. Prentice gives the example of a lawyer who has invested a lot of time and money in education and training. Any company that hires lawyers has to pay high salaries and benefits to make up for all that investment in knowledge. On the other hand, an intelligent machine that replaces a lawyer also needs a long and expensive learning path. But after the first smart machine, the company can add as many machines as it needs for relatively little additional cost. Financial services is another industry where functions such as lending or insurance analytics can be automated.

AI will affect employment in some industries, but others will benefit from AI and automation to perform repetitive routines, leaving time available for teams to focus on improving service levels, handling more challenging tasks or even lowering levels. of stress in some work environments.

AI will help CIOs restructure IT operations

AI will eventually replace many routine functions in IT departments, especially in operational areas such as systems administration, help desk, project management and application support.

Some jobs will disappear, but AI will improve some skills gaps, and IT departments as a whole will increasingly focus on more creative work that sets the company apart.

“CIOs should challenge the enterprise architecture team to identify what roles in IT will become utilities and create a timeline for when those changes become possible,” added the analyst. “Working with human resources will ensure that a company has a plan to mitigate any disruption caused by AI, such as providing training to help operational teams move into more creative positions.

As such, CIOs must prepare companies for changing hiring priorities. People and machines can collaborate like each other, and when situations change substantially, humans can adjust.”

“Ultimately, AI and humans will differentiate themselves from each other,” Prentice points out. "AI will be more successful in solving problems that are relatively well defined and narrow in scope, while humans will remain experts in defining problems that need to be solved and in solving complex problems." Humans can master more knowledge and skills to deal with and solve problems in various ways.

Gartner recommends CIOs use the company's five-year vision to develop a plan and strike a balance between AI and human competencies.

Too much AI-related automation can lead companies to become less flexible and less able to adjust to a changing and competitive environment. This approach can also help to reassure employees about when and how AI can be used in an organization.
